Anne Boleyn’s Book of Hours
Henry and the court regularly attended Mass in the royal chapel, sometimes more than once a day.
The King often used the time before the consecration to transact business but this manuscript shows him using a book of prayers to send a flirtatious message to Anne Boleyn instead. He wrote in French: ‘If you remember my love in your prayers as strongly as I adore you, I shall hardly be forgotten, for I am yours. Henry R. forever.’ Presenting himself as lovesick, he wrote his note on a page depicting the man of sorrows.
Anne replied with a couplet in English: ‘By daily proof you shall me find To be to you both loving and kind.’ And, with deliberate enticement, she chose to write her message below a miniature of the Annunciation, the angel telling the Virgin Mary that she would have a son.

Coram Rege Roll of Elizabeth I, 1581.
The roll records court proceedings that were supposed to be carried out before the king in person (coram rege), although that was rarely true. The rolls often include a portrait of the monarch as if to suggest this presence.

Queen Anne Boleyn on the Day of her Execution Friday, May 19, 1536
This morning she sent for me, that I might be with her at such time as she received the good Lord, to the intent I should hear her speak as touching her innocency alway to be clear. And in the writing of this she sent for me, and at my coming she said, “Mr. Kingston, I hear I shall not die afore noon, and I am very sorry therefore, for I thought to be dead by this time and past my pain “. I told her it should be no pain, it was so little. And then she said, “I heard say the executioner was very good, and I have a little neck”, and then put her hands about it, laughing heartily. I have seen many men and also women executed, and that they have been in great sorrow, and to my knowledge this lady has much joy in death. Sir, her almoner is continually with her, and had been since two o’clock after midnight.
