Lady Margaret Clifford. ND, Artist Unknown

Margaret (Clifford) Stanley, Countess of Derby (1540-1596) was the daughter of Henry Clifford, 2nd Earl of Cumberland and Lady Eleanor Brandon. She was the granddaughter of Mary Tudor and Charles Brandon.
Upon the death of her mother, Margaret became seventh in line to the throne of England, and after the deaths of her cousins Jane Grey and Mary Grey and the never-proven legitimacy of the children of her cousin Catherine Grey, she became first in line. She died before the death of Queen Elizabeth I, and her granddaughter, Lady Anne Stanley, became heiress presumptive, but was passed over for James VI of Scotland.
